WELCOME NORTH MAIN

A warm welcome to Georgia United’s newest members joining us since our merger with North Main Credit Union, which became official on October 2, expanding our field of membership to Banks and Habersham counties. The merger also adds a new location to our network, as North Main’s former headquarters is now Georgia United’s Cornelia branch. North Main was originally chartered in 1978 as Lumite Credit Association to serve employees of the nearby Lumite plant, a division of Johnson & Johnson. That plant was soon taken over by another division of Johnson & Johnson called Ethicon so the name was changed to Ethicon Credit Union. In 2016, the credit union moved to 255 North Main Street in downtown Cornelia and changed its name to North Main Credit Union.

ACCOUNT ALERTS

Unfortunately, online scams and fraud attempts are on the rise and continue to evolve making them more difficult to spot. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so this is your reminder to set up account alerts. You can stay informed about important member account activity – including unusual or suspicious transactions - with alerts delivered to your email or mobile phone.  Alerts are easy to set up in Online Banking or the Georgia United Mobile App. Log in and select ‘Services’ and then click ‘Alerts.’  Select the alerts you want to add and toggle the switch to start receiving them.  Have peace of mind when you add another layer of protection to your account with alerts and get notified when fraudsters are up to no good.

MAKING HERSTORY

On September 28, Georgia United Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Outreach Cindy Connolly made history when she was inducted into the “Credit Union Women Making History: Herstory” program at America's Credit Union Museum. This is a well-deserved honor for Connolly, who joined Georgia United in February 2020. For more than four decades, she has been an advocate for Georgia credit unions and their members and is a well-respected relationship builder from Georgia’s Gold Dome to Washington D.C.'s Capitol Hill.

NEW VOICES

Georgia United’s volunteer board of directors serve as member advocates and work closely with the credit union’s leadership team to set policy, monitor risk and guide the execution of the organization’s strategic plan. Two new members were recently appointed to the board: Sandy R. Burney and David Arner. Both terms run through 2025. “We are beyond blessed to have the talents, time and energy of David and Sandy at our disposal as we welcome them to the Georgia United board,” said Board Chair Tom Dickson.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Here are a few recent highlights of how Georgia United is serving our community, including initiatives managed by our philanthropic arm, Georgia United Foundation.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Georgia United’s corporate office in Duluth is now also home to the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC), which unites the credit union movement to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion. To celebrate its new digs on the second floor of our corporate office, AACUC hosted an open house in July. At the event, AACUC President/CEO Renee Sattiewhite officially dedicated one of the organization’s meeting spaces as The Smith Conference Room, in honor of Georgia United CEO Debbie Smith and Maurie R. Smith, former president/CEO of Raleigh, N.C.’s Local Government Federal Credit Union. Georgia United is a corporate partner of AACUC and stands against racism.

OUT & ABOUT

Two recent programs reflect the essence of the credit union mantra “people helping people.” Georgia United teammates donned capes and hit the lanes at Bowlero in Chamblee to raise almost $3,000 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at the superhero-themed 2023 Credit Union for Kids Bowl-A-Thon. Meanwhile, Georgia United Foundation’s 2023 Can Hunger campaign benefiting local food banks nearly doubled the goal by raising close to $10,000, which will provide approximately 40,000 meals for people in our communities struggling with food insecurity.
